Welcome to Chestnut Hill Cabin in beautiful Breckenridge, Colorado. We are Jamie & Trevor, your vacation rental hosts located in Summit County. We would love for you, your family and your friends to stay in one of our unique mountain properties on your next vacation. Chestnut Hill Cabin was our first rental property, which is why this blog bears its name. At the time, we didn’t realize our business would grow to include additional homes, so now everything we do falls under the Chestnut Hill Cabin umbrella.
We have learned so much about hosting, and are always seeking better ways to improve our guest experience. From restaurants and retailers to hiking boots and ski jackets, we want to share all of our recommendations with you. (If you download the LTK app, we have saved our best finds for you!). Trevor and I fell in love with Breckenridge in 2013, when we brought our three young sons skiing for the first time. The minute they experienced fresh powder underneath their tiny snowboards, we knew this would be a lifelong hobby for our family. We decided to invest in this lifestyle once we discovered that every season offered new and different activities for those, like us, seeking outdoor adventure.

TOP 6 FREE KID FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES in BRECKENRIDGE, COLORADO
Family vacations to mountain towns can be expensive. Thankfully, there are several ways to enjoy your trip to these charming locations without breaking the bank. Here are our top 6 FREE family friendly things to do while in beautiful Breckenridge, Colorado:
1️⃣ Ride the Breckenridge gondola 🚠
Park in the gondola lot in town and take the 20 minute ride up the mountain to the base of Peak 8. The views are incredible and the experience is one your kids will never forget. Grab some famous pretzel bites at Robbie’s Tavern before heading back down.

2️⃣ Take a hike 🎒 🥾
Our favorite family hikes are Sawmill Reservoir, Sapphire Point Loop, Blue Lakes (Blue River), Snowflake Trail and the Peak 7 hike to the Nordic center (Cucumber Gulch Trail).
3️⃣ Go Fishing 🎣
Load up your poles and take the kids to Sawmill Reservoir for a day of fishing. Pack a picnic lunch and explore the grounds. Park in the free lot across from the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center but arrive early bc parking is limited.

4️⃣ Visit the Breckenridge Troll
Yes, this is a very “touristy” activity, however it’s a crowd pleaser for the kids. Park in the Stephen C. West Ice Center parking lot and explore the Highline Railroad Playground before heading out on the short trail behind the rink to see Isak Heartstone, the 15 foot tall wooden structure created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo.

5️⃣ Visit Blue River Plaza 🌊
In the heart of downtown Breckenridge, you’ll find Blue River Plaza. This picturesque riverfront plaza is surrounded by quaint shops, restaurants, museums, green space and a playground. On a warm summer afternoon, it’s the perfect place for kids to cool off as they are allowed to play in the river. Bring a swimsuit & towel for this activity and sit back as your kids enjoy climbing rocks and exploring.

6️⃣ Spend the morning at River Park 🛝
Breckenridge’s is full of beautiful parks, but this one is a fan favorite. It has something for everyone with typical playground equipment plus a small bike park and splash pad. Definitely worth a visit!
